Composite Dental Restoration Los Alamitos

Composite Dental Restorations Los Alamitos CAFor many years, dentists had limited options for treating decay. A filling could be made of silver amalgam or gold, neither of which gives your smile a very natural appearance. But modern dental technology gives us a much more natural-looking way to fill a tooth using metal-free composite resin.

Tooth-colored resin offers many advantages over traditional metal amalgam alloys. It allows for an esthetically pleasing restoration and eliminates any metal allergies or mercury exposure because composite is a 100% biocompatible material. Los Alamitos dentist Dr. Edward Luong provides all of his patients with these beautiful, strong, biocompatible composite resin fillings.

Why Are Biocompatible Materials Better?

Biocompatible materials are materials that your body accepts as a natural part of itself, reducing the risk of reactions that you may have when using foreign materials that the body does not accept. This is especially important if you have a sensitivity to certain metals. Using biocompatible or biologically inert materials in dentistry offers a safer alternative to all of our patients.

Our Los Alamitos dental office strives to make biocompatible, metal-free restorations available for all of the dental treatments we provide. We believe metal-free dental restorations offer a healthier and more esthetic alternative to restorations that use metal while still maintaining strength and durability.

What to Expect During Your Composite Restoration

At your appointment, you will first be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Dr. Luong will remove the decayed part of your tooth, and the cavity is lightly etched with a mild acid to roughen the surfaces, which allows the filling to adhere better. Once the tooth is disinfected and prepared, the composite resin material will be mixed and colored to match your natural teeth.

The composite is a soft gel-like material that fills the tooth. The pliable material allows us to preserve more natural tooth, as composite fillings don't require extra "anchors" to be drilled like amalgam fillings need. Only the decayed parts of the tooth need to be removed, leaving your tooth stronger and healthier after the filling.

Once the composite is in place, a special light is used to cure the material, setting it so it becomes hard and fused to the tooth. The curing process leaves you with a strong, natural-looking filling that will last years and is nearly invisible. We recommend sticking to liquids after getting your filling to allow the numbness to wear off before eating, usually around two to three hours.
